Even if you are sure that it's not loaded, always treat it as if it was. The first thing to do when you pick up a gun is check to see if it's loaded. Open the action and make sure, with your eyes, that there is not a bullet in the barrel. If you don't know how to check if the gun is loaded, NEVER pick it up. Ask a grown up for help! |
When you pick up a gun to check if it's loaded, be sure to point the gun only at the floor/ground or away from people or property that you wouldn't want to shoot. And when you're getting ready to shoot, always know what's behind your target. You wouldn't want to shoot in the direction of your neighbor's house or horse or anything else that might get you in trouble. |
This way when you sneeze or stumble, it won't accidentally go "BANG". |
NEVER pick up a gun of any kind without a grown-up there to help, or without a grown-up knowing AND allowing you to handle the gun. |
Never use a real gun as a toy. Don't pick it up and play "cops and robbers". If someone doesn't know you're playing a game, they might think the gun is loaded and shoot you for real. That would be really, really BAD! Or, if you didn't check to see if it was loaded, you might accidentally shoot your dog or someone else that you love. REAL GUNS ARE NOT TOYS! |
Definitely when you're target shooting you need to wear ear plugs and safety glasses. Some hunters wear them when they're hunting also. However, some hunters believe that it's NOT safe to wear ear plugs when hunting because you will be unable to hear what's going on around you....like your dad giving you important instructions! Also, most hunters don't wear glasses when they're hunting because the glare of the glasses will alarm animals. |

It's best not to store a gun that's loaded and when carrying a gun around a gun range you should always leave the action open so that everyone can see with their eyes that you and your gun are safe! |
It's really easy to miss our target, whether it's a creature or an empty can....I've missed plenty of them! There are lots of things that can make you miss your target, like the wind, or flinching when you pull the trigger. You'd be really sad if your dog was laying in the grass chewing on a bone near your target and you accidently shot him..... And another good rule to follow is when you're looking at your target, ALL PEOPLE should be BEHIND YOU or BESIDE YOU.....NEVER in front of you, even a little bit! |
Until you've used a gun a lot, ask a grown-up to explain how the gun works each time before you use it....or you could explain it to the grown-up to prove that you know how to operate it safely. |
REALLY BAD things can happen if you shoot the wrong ammo for your gun! Not only can it hurt the gun, but it can hurt you very badly....KABOOM in your face! Double check to make sure you're shooting the right ammo. |
